Stripe Declined A Card

Sometimes Stripe will decline a charge with the message:

"Your card does not support this type of purchase".

There's nothing Propcart can do to fix it, and here's why.

What it actually means

This error usually means the issuing bank is blocking the transaction based on how the charge is classified, not because the card number or funds are bad.

In other words:
The card works, just not for this kind of charge (e.g. prop rentals).

The most common causes

1. Card type restrictions (very common)

Some cards simply cannot be used for certain transaction types:

  • Debit cards that don’t allow:
    • Online / card-not-present charges
    • Recurring charges
    • Cross-border transactions
  • Prepaid cards that block:
    • Rentals
    • Authorization + capture flows
  • Corporate / purchasing cards with merchant-category restrictions

If you’re charging for rentals or authorizing a card, this pops up a lot.

2. Merchant Category Code (MCC) mismatch

Every Stripe account has an MCC (e.g. software, rentals, services).

Some cards are locked down to:

  • “Office supplies only”
  • “Travel only”
  • “No software subscriptions”
  • “No online services”

If the card’s rules don’t allow your MCC, then you get an instant decline with this message.

3. Authorization type not supported

This one hits rental companies like prop houses especially hard.

Examples:

  • You authorize now, capture later
  • You do a higher capture than the original authorization
  • You place a deposit or incremental authorization

Some cards simply don’t support these flows, especially:

  • Debit cards
  • Prepaid cards
  • Certain EU consumer cards

What it doesn’t mean

  • ❌ Not insufficient funds
  • ❌ Not an invalid card number
  • ❌ Not a temporary network error
  • ❌ Not a Propcart bug

It’s a policy decision by the card's issuing bank.

The Solution

Ask the customer to:

  • try a different card that is less restrictive, or
  • contact their bank to remove these restrictions.
